Why Time Feels Faster Every Year You Get Older

A summer at seven felt endless. A summer at forty disappears. The maths is oddly simple.

The effect is real but much narrower than the cliché. People of all ages judge hours, weeks and months to pass at roughly the same speed. What changes is the retrospective judgment of long stretches — ask about the last ten years and older adults consistently report they went faster. The leading explanation is memory density: routine years lay down fewer distinct memories, so they leave a shorter trace to look back on.

This is a topic where the popular explanation and the evidence have drifted apart, so it is worth separating what has actually been measured from what merely sounds right.

What actually changes with age

The reference study is Marc Wittmann and Sandra Lehnhoff's 2005 survey of 499 people aged 14 to 94. They asked about the perceived speed of the passage of time across several intervals, from the immediate present up to the previous decade.

The result was more specific than the headline. For short durations — a week, a month, even a year — perceived speed barely varied with age. The age effect appeared clearly only in judgments of the last ten years, where older respondents consistently reported the decade had gone faster.

That pattern has held up unusually well. It has been replicated with participants in the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada and Japan, which in an era of failed replications is worth noting. Some studies find the effect for the last three and five years too, but not for the last single year.

One number deserves attention: in the original study the age-related effects were small to moderate, accounting for at most about 10 percent of the variance. The authors themselves cautioned that methodological limitations mean the interpretations should be treated carefully. The direction of the effect is solid. Its size is modest, and articles that describe time as "accelerating dramatically" with age are overselling a real but restrained finding.

The proportional theory, and why it isn't enough

The explanation most people reach for is proportional. A year is a tenth of a ten-year-old's life and a fortieth of a forty-year-old's, so each successive year represents a shrinking fraction of the whole and feels correspondingly shorter. It is elegant, it is old, and it captures something.

It also makes a prediction that the data do not support. If the mechanism were a straightforward proportional comparison against total lifespan, the compression should apply smoothly at every scale — the last week and the last year should shorten with age just as the last decade does. They do not. The age effect is concentrated in long retrospective intervals, which is not what a pure proportional model predicts.

Later work revisiting the proportional models found that the variant performing best was the one incorporating novelty. But novelty affects subjective time precisely because novel experiences are encoded more richly into memory — which means the improved proportional model is really a memory model wearing different clothes. The observation survives. The mechanism does not.

Memory density

The account with the most support runs through memory. When you judge how long a past period lasted, you have no direct access to its duration. What you have is the record — how much distinct, retrievable material that stretch of life left behind. A period dense with novel events reads as long. A period of routine reads as short, because there is less of it to find.

Childhood and early adulthood are saturated with firsts: new schools, new places, new skills, new people, wholesale changes of context. Each is encoded richly and separately. Middle age tends toward repetition — the same commute, the same rooms, the same weekly shape — and repeated events are consolidated rather than stored individually. Fewer timestamps, shorter apparent stretch. The mechanics of encoding also govern other memory quirks in this hub, including why déjà vu becomes less common as you age.

The holiday paradox

This account explains something the proportional theory cannot: the same period can feel fast in the moment and long in retrospect. A week abroad packed with novelty passes quickly while you are in it and expands when you look back, because it generated an unusual density of distinct memories. A week of routine does the reverse — unremarkable while it happens, then compressed to nearly nothing weeks later.

Prospective and retrospective time judgments run on different information. Conflating them is the single most common error in popular writing on this subject.

A 2026 refinement

Recent work by Teghil, Wittmann and colleagues sharpens the claim usefully. Their finding points to memory encoding for new information — rather than the sheer accumulated load of autobiographical memory — as what tracks age-related differences in how fast the past decade seems to have gone. That distinction matters: it is not that older adults have more life stored and each year is therefore a smaller share of it. It is about how much new material is being laid down now.

What the evidence does not support

Several confident-sounding explanations circulate with much thinner backing. Accounts that tie the effect to a slowing internal clock — declining metabolic rate, reduced rate of mental image processing, changes in saccade frequency — have generated attention and some striking mathematical framing, but not a body of converging empirical support comparable to the memory work.

It is also worth resisting the pop-neuroscience version in which time perception reduces to a single neurotransmitter or brain region. Interval timing engages multiple systems and no clean anatomical answer exists. When you read one, check whether the source is describing a finding or an analogy.

Does anything slow it down?

If retrospective duration tracks memory density, the implication is mechanical rather than mystical: periods containing more novel, distinctly encoded experience leave more behind to look back on. This is the basis for the standard advice about seeking out new routes, new places and new skills, and the reasoning is sound as far as it goes.

Two honest caveats. First, this is an inference from how retrospective judgment works, not a tested intervention — nobody has run a controlled trial demonstrating that a novelty regime measurably slows subjective time over years. Second, the states in which time reliably crawls are not ones anyone would choose: illness, boredom, social rejection, low mood. A life in which time feels slow is not automatically a better one.

The deeper point is that your sense of duration is built from the units your brain carves experience into, and those units are created by boundaries — changes of place, activity, context. That is the same segmentation machinery behind forgetting your errand at the kitchen door. More boundaries mean more units. More units mean more time, at least the kind you can look back on.
