Why We Enjoy Scary Movies When Fear Feels Awful

You paid to be terrified in a room you could leave at any time. That last part is the whole point.

Three explanations compete, and the field data favour a different one than the folk version. It is not mainly about relief afterwards: measurements taken inside a haunted house show enjoyment peaking during the fear, in an inverted-U relationship where too little is boring and too much stops being fun. The best-supported accounts treat horror as arousal-seeking within a known-safe frame, and possibly as low-cost practice for threat.

The paradox is real. Fear evolved to make you avoid things, and people pay money for it, queue for it, and rank it as a favourite genre. Any explanation has to account for enjoyment coexisting with genuine physiological fear rather than replacing it.

Excitation transfer: the relief theory

The oldest serious account comes from Dolf Zillmann. Physiological arousal decays slowly — much more slowly than the conscious emotion that produced it. So when the threat resolves and the monster is defeated, the residual arousal from the fear is still circulating, and it intensifies whatever you feel next. Relief becomes elation because it is riding on borrowed activation.

This is a real and well-demonstrated mechanism in general. Arousal from one source genuinely does amplify subsequent emotional responses, which is the same borrowing that lets a tense body relabel a threat as tolerable when laughter arrives at a terrible moment.

As a complete explanation of horror, though, it makes a prediction that does not hold. If enjoyment came from the resolution, horror with bleak or unresolved endings should be systematically less enjoyable. A great deal of the genre — much of it commercially successful and critically admired — ends badly on purpose, and audiences keep buying tickets.

What happens inside an actual haunted house

The most informative work moved out of the laboratory. Marc Malmdorf Andersen and colleagues, including Coltan Scrivner and Mathias Clasen, ran a field study at a Danish haunted attraction with 110 visitors aged twelve to fifty-seven, fitted with heart rate monitors and filmed at peak scare points.

The relationship between fear and enjoyment was an inverted U. Not enough fear was boring. Too much stopped being fun. Enjoyment peaked at an intermediate level — what the authors described as a sweet spot.

The physiological data sharpened this. Self-reported fright tracked large-scale heart rate fluctuations linearly — more upheaval, more fear. But enjoyment showed the inverted-U relationship with small-scale heart rate fluctuations, suggesting that what people enjoy is a particular quality of arousal dynamics rather than the amount of fear as such.

Note what this does to the relief theory. Enjoyment was being reported during the experience, at the scare points, not merely reconstructed afterwards from the pleasure of it ending.

Benign masochism

Paul Rozin's account covers a wider category: people reliably come to enjoy experiences that are innately aversive — chilli burn, bitter drinks, sad music, extreme cold, frightening films. He calls these hedonic reversals, and the common thread is that the body registers a threat while the mind knows there is none.

The enjoyment on this account comes partly from that mismatch itself — a kind of pleasure in your own body being fooled while you remain in control. It fits the horror data well, and it explains why the safety frame is not incidental. A haunted house you could not leave would not be entertainment.

Threat simulation

The most functional account holds that horror is practice. Engaging with simulated danger lets you rehearse threat scenarios and your own responses at no real cost — learning what frightens you, how you behave under pressure, and what strategies work, in a setting where being wrong is free.

The most cited evidence arrived by accident. Scrivner and colleagues surveyed people early in the COVID-19 pandemic and found that horror fans reported greater psychological resilience during it, with fans of apocalyptic and pandemic-themed fiction also reporting greater preparedness.

How much that study can carry

Less than it is usually made to. It was correlational and cross-sectional: people who choose to consume threat-themed fiction may already differ in morbid curiosity, anxiety tolerance or sensation-seeking, and nothing in the design separates practice from selection. It is a genuinely interesting result and it is not evidence that watching horror makes you resilient.

Who actually watches

Horror audiences are not psychologically uniform, and the trait differences are large enough to matter for any general explanation. Sensation-seeking and morbid curiosity both predict horror enjoyment, and researchers working in this area have distinguished several fan types — those who seek the arousal itself, those who enjoy the aftermath, and those who report learning something about themselves from the experience.

A related line of work examined people voluntarily undergoing high-arousal negative experiences and found that reported affect improved afterwards, most clearly among those who arrived tired, bored or stressed. That points to a mood-repair function: an intense, absorbing, externally imposed experience can displace a low-arousal negative state, which is a different benefit from either relief or rehearsal.

It also complicates any single-mechanism story. If different people are getting arousal regulation, mood repair and threat rehearsal out of the same film, then asking which theory is correct may be the wrong question.

How the three fit together

They are not really competitors. Excitation transfer describes a mechanism operating during and after arousal. Benign masochism describes the conditions under which aversive stimulation becomes pleasurable. Threat simulation proposes a function that would explain why the capacity exists at all. A person can be doing all three at once.

What the recent field work adds is a constraint they all have to satisfy: enjoyment is not monotonic in fear. It has an optimum, and the optimum differs between people — which is why the same film is a good night for one person and an ordeal for another, and why horror fandom is better predicted by where your sweet spot sits than by whether you feel fear at all.

There is a broader pattern here that this hub keeps running into: intense arousal producing an expressive or behavioural response that looks like the opposite of what caused it. Screaming and laughing at the same moment in a haunted house is the same structural oddity as wanting to squeeze something because it is unbearably cute.
